Washington determines new categories that can qualify for a National Interest Exception: the Critical Infrastructure Support.
As already anticipated with the previous circular, on March 2, 2021, Washington determined new categories of travelers from the Schengen area Countries who could travel to the United States if, as established by a Consular officer, they qualify for a National Interest Exception (NIE) to the Presidential Proclamation, which suspends ordinary travel from the Schengen area to the United States.
New exemptions from the Entry Ban
Travelers who provide vital support to the critical infrastructure sectors indicated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or from distribution chains connected to critical infrastructure, can obtain an exemption from the entry ban.
In this regard, we inform you that the critical infrastructures defined by the DHS are the following:
- chemical sector
- commercial facilities sector
- communications sector
- manufacturing industry (production of primary metals, machinery, electrical equipment and transport equipment)
- sector of dams and hydroelectric plants
- industrial base for defense
- emergency services
- energy sector
- financial services
- food and agriculture
- government structures
- health care and public health
- information technology
- nuclear sector
- transport sector
- water/wastewater systems
