Candidate's eligibility assessment
During the consultation video call, our experts will assess whether the requirements for the Italian citizenship by marriage are met.
The general requirements to be able to apply for Italian citizenship by marriage are:
- Being married with an Italian national for 3 years, if residing abroad OR being married with an Italian national for 2 years if residing in Italy (with exception in case of children)
- Knowledge of the Italian language at least at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
Applicants will also have to provide their birth certificate and criminal record certificate issued by the authorities of the country of origin.
Timeline for the citizenship process
The timing for obtaining citizenship is defined by the Italian legislation:
- Step 1: DOCUMENT COLLECTION AND VERIFICATION (usually 30-40 days but variable according to the timing for translation and legalization of documents)
- Step 2: SUBMISSION OF THE APPLICATION TO THE COMPETENT AUTHORITIES (1-2 days)
- Step 3: ISSUANCE OF CITIZENSHIP (24 months, extendable, in some cases, up to 36 months)
- Step 4: APPLICATION FOR ITALIAN IDENTITY CARD AND PASSPORT (1-2 months)
The timeline can vary depending on the specific case, on the documents complexity and on the authorities involved.
