Timeline
The timing for the residence permit issuance is defined by the Italian immigration law and the standard procedure applied by the authorities involved.
- Step 1: DOCUMENTS COLLECTION AND VERIFICATION (5-7 days)
- Step 2: POSTAL KIT SUBMISSION AT THE POST OFFICE(within 8 days of entry into Italy)
- Step 3: FINGERPRINTS APPOINTMENT AT THE QUESTURA (usually a few months after the post office appointment)
- Step 4: COLLECTION OF THE RESIDENCE PERMIT AT THE QUESTURA (usually a few months after the fingerprints appointment)

What is the difference between a visa and a residence permit?
The visa is issued by the Italian Embassy or Consulate abroad and allows the foreigner to enter Italy. The residence permit is issued in Italy by the Italian authorities (police) and allows the foreigner to live in Italy for more than 90 days.
Can I renew my residence permit?
It is generally possible to renew the residence permit; this depends on the type of permit and the compliance with the individual requirements.
Can I obtain a long-term residence permit?
It is generally possible to apply for a long-term residence permit (10 years validity) after 5 years of legally stay in Italy with a valid residence permit.
How long can I stay outside of Italy and maintain my residence permit?
The local authorities may decide to not renew the residence permit to a person who stayed for more than half of its duration outside of Italy.
