You can send a free request to our team to explain your case and get a personalized quote.
- We offer you a consultation video call: we will explain the procedures to follow in the event of illness abroad, so that you can correctly claim sickness benefits from Italy.
- We will help you request and/or legalize your medical certificate in the foreign country: it must contain a series of information required by Italian law. In addition, you will need to comply with local legislation to allow for medical check-ups.
Illness allowance in EU, EEA or Switzerland
The Italian state provides protection in the event of illness for both employees, self-employed workers and freelancers.
In the event of illness in an EU or EEA country or Switzerland, the worker is covered by the legislation of the country of the competent institution, i.e., the country in which the worker is insured.
In accordance with social security regulations, workers on secondment are issued with form A1 and form S1.
Illness in a non-EU country
If you fall ill during a stay in a non-EU country, however, the procedure varies depending on whether Italy has signed bilateral agreements with the foreign country.
– In countries with which Italy has agreements, the procedure to follow is the same as for EU countries.
– In countries with which Italy has no agreements, sickness benefits are paid only after the duly legalized certificate has been submitted to the Italian authorities.
Submission of the sickness certificate
Under Italian law, employees must submit the completed sickness certificate to the relevant INPS office within two days of it being issued to get the Italian illness allowance.
Within the same timeframe, employees must also send their employer the sickness certificate, i.e. the certificate without the diagnosis details.
Our consultants will assist you in complying with the deadlines, including the requirement for the certificate to be legalized.
