Italy-Australia agreement
Currently, Australia has signed reciprocal agreements with 11 countries, including Italy. Based on such agreements, visitors can get publicly funded medically necessary care.

Scope of the agreement
According to the The Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) in place between Italy and Australia, Australian tourists visiting Italy may receive free care for the following services:
- care as a hospital patient or out-patient at public and authorized hospitals.
- GP and specialist care from public clinics, health centers and authorized hospitals and clinics.
- urgent dental care at public hospitals.
Italian tourists visiting Australia may access Australian Medicare for up to six months. They are guaranteed urgency medical care for free, but other costs must be borne by the tourists themselves.
Australian "medicare" program
Medicare is an Australian program whose purpose is assisting Australian nationals with medical expenses. This program, though, is only valid within the Australian territory.
To access the Australian health care service, you must prove that you are resident in Italy and be registered with the Italian health service, by showing your passport and the Italian national health card at any Medicare office. The entitlement to six-month coverage resets in case of a second re-entry into Australian territory.
