The Italy-Tunisia agreement on the recognition of driving licenses for conversion purposes came into force on 20 July 2025. The agreement will last for five (5) years with possibility of extension.
With a Note dated June 30th 2025, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure informed the motor vehicle registration authority of the applicable conversion procedure.
Conversion procedure
The driving license conversion consists of replacing the license issued by the foreign country with an Italian license. However, convertibility depends exclusively on the existence of reciprocal agreements in force between Italy and the foreign country in question.
In summary, it is necessary to check the updated list of countries that have signed bilateral agreements with Italy.
It is not possible to convert driving licenses issued by countries without a bilateral agreement. In this case, one must follow the standard procedure for obtaining an Italian driving license.
Italy-Tunisia driving license agreement
Tunisian license holders may only apply for conversion if they have been resident in Italy for less than six years. Also, they must hold a valid Tunisian driving license. It is not possible to convert licenses obtained after acquiring residence in Italy. Furthermore, it is not possible to convert licenses obtained by previous conversion from countries without agreement with Italy.
In addition, the authorities may request a medical certificate proving the psychological and physical requirements necessary for conversion.
Finally, the Motor Vehicle Registration Office may ask for an official translation of the Tunisian license. For doubts about the authenticity or validity of the license or the information it contains, they may request specific information from the Tunisian embassies or consulates before proceeding with the conversion.
