Who must apply for the Italian passport
Passport types
The Italian passport is an identification document needed to travel internationally; all those who plan to travel must obtain the Italian passport.
There are two types of documents:
- The ordinary passport – it is the standard document
- The temporary passport – this is a paper-format emergency document
Holding a passport does not necessarily mean one can travel freely in anu destination country; in fact, most country worldwide require a visa on the passport.
How to apply for the passport

Generally, the application for issuing a passport shall be submitted to the territorial competent office based on the applicant’s country of residence, in Italy or abroad.
Accordingly, if you reside outside of Italy, you can apply for the Italian passport at the Italian diplomatic representation in your country of residence. If you reside in Italy, instead, you must apply for the passport at the local police headquarters competent for your residency. In specific cases, the passport may be issued by an office other than the one of residence, provided that a prior authorization is obtained.
Which is the passport duration
Passport validity
The validity of the ordinary passport depends on the applicant’s age. It is valid 3 years for minors under 3 years of age, 5 years for minors from 3 to 18 years of age. For adults, it is valid 10 years.
Furthermore, expired passports can no longer be renewed. This means that the applicant must apply for a new passport. The procedure to renew the passport is the same as for applying for a new one.

It is possible to book an appointment for the passport application online. However, the applicant will need to attend the appointment in person with the requested documents.
How to get an emergency travel document?
The emergency travel document is a temporary document with a validity of 5 days including the date of issue. It can be issued if the applicant has no valid identification document for travel.
