Temporary return to border controls

The Italian Ministry of Interior announced on Friday May 31st, 2024, that, due to the upcoming G7 meetings in Borgo Egnazia, Puglia, there will be a temporary return to border checks. The controls will be in force from June 5th, at 2:00 pm, to June 18th, at 2:00 pm

N.B.: As a part of the border-free Schengen area, Italy has abolished internal border controls, allowing free movement to anyone that is legally present in the European Union.

Border police will carry out checks at national land, sea and air borders.

This is a quite consolidated practice the Italian Government sets in place in case of events, such as G7, that warrant for extra caution. In fact, articles 25 and 27 of the EU Regulation 2016/399 of March 9th, 2016, allow for this temporary measure to be reinstated, in case of security threats.

Thus, starting June 5th, travellers may expect some delays at passport control.
