Skip to content Starting from October 1st, 2025, China will introduce a new visa type, called “K Visa”, to attract young foreign workers.
This is following the State Council’s approval to update the Regulations on the Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners. The aim is to further implement China’s workforce, facilitating the entry for foreign sci-tech talent.
Such approach is in line with other rules recently implemented such as the expansion of the country’s visa-free travel programs.
What is the K Visa?
The visa is for young foreign professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Especially, it is designed for those who wish to work, conduct research or engage in similar professional activities in China.
The categories of workers who can benefit from the K Visa are mainly early-career professionals, recent graduates and young researchers. The aim is to facilitate the entry of young STEM talents for work, research, internships, academic exchanges, and entrepreneurial activities.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible, applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree issued by reputable domestic or international universities or research institutions. They must be graduates or individuals currently teaching or conducting research in STEM at such institutions.
Furthermore, applicants must be “young” talents – i.e. they must meet an age limit that the authorities will confirm.
K Visa main benefits
Compared with the existing 12 ordinary Chinese visa types, K visas will offer more flexibility. This will include the number of permitted entries, visa validity period and permitted length of stay.
Furthermore, applications for K visas won’t require a domestic employer or entity to issue an invitation letter. Therefore, the application process will be more streamlined.
After entering China, K visa holders can engage in exchanges in fields such as education, culture, science, and technology. Furthermore, they can perform relevant entrepreneurial and business activities.
How to apply for a K visa
The authorities will publish detailed eligibility criteria, required documentation and procedures before October 1st, 2025.
