The Reve is the Italian registry of foreign vehicles. It includes the list of cars with non-Italian license plates driven in Italy, for which there is no obligation of Italian plate obtainment.

How long can I drive a foreign car in Italy?

If you don’t have the obligation to obtain an Italian license plate, you can register your foreign car in the Reve. The duration of the Reve registration is at the discretion of the authorities. The registration can have a duration of 1 or 2 years, renewable.

How to register a foreign car in Italy to the Reve?

To register a car with Reve, you must contact the Public Vehicle Register (PRA). You must schedule an appointment through the online “PrenotACI” portal and submit the registration application in person to the PRA office.

The documents for the registration application vary according to the two cases.

Case 1

This is the case of Italian residents driving a car with foreign license plate, that they do not own, for more than 30 days per year. The 30 days may be consecutive or may be the sum of several periods during the same year. In this case it’s necessary to include in the application the following documents:

d. Document proving that the use of the car is legitimate.

e. If the documentation is brought to the appointment at the PRA by a delegate, it will be necessary to bring the duly completed and signed delegation form and a copy of the delegate’s valid identity document.

Case 2

The car with foreign number plates is owned by a worker (either self-employed or employed) who works in a country bordering or neighbouring Italy. In this case it’s necessary to include the following documents in the registration application:

a. Completed and signed registration application form.

b. Copy of the car owner’s identity document.

c. Copy of the vehicle registration certificate issued by the foreign country in which the car is registered. If the car is registered in a non-EU country, a certified translation of the vehicle registration certificate must also be included in the application.

d. Document issued to the owner after the purchase of the car.

e. Health card or certificate of Italian tax code assignment of the worker who drives the car. Applicants must include one of the two documents only if the worker driving the car does not have a valid CIE (electronic identity card).

f. Documents proving that the worker carries out their work in a country bordering or neighbouring Italy.

g. Substitute declaration of notarial deed if the documentation submitted for the Reve registration application does not contain the information required for registration.

h. If the documentation is submitted by a delegate, it will be necessary to bring the duly completed and signed delegation form and a copy of the delegate’s valid identity document.

d. Document proving that the car is no longer available, if this information is not already present in the registration certificate issued by the foreign country.

Must foreign documents be accompanied by an Italian translation?

If the supporting documents are not in Italian, an Italian translation must also be included. On this point, if the translation is done in Italy, it must be a sworn translation. In case the translation is done outside Italy, it must be a translation certified as conforming to the foreign language document.

In countries where the profession of the official translator is not recognised, the translation must be certified by the relevant diplomatic or consular authority. Where the profession of the official translator is recognised, instead, the translation must be certified by an official translator.
