General requirements for the Italian identity card application

During the consultancy video-call, our experts will evaluate whether you meet the requirements to apply for the CIE and guide you through the entire application process.

The CIE can be requested by non-Italian citizens residing in Italy who hold a valid residence permit and are registered with the Municipal Registry Office (Anagrafe). It can be obtained by foreign nationals from both EU and non-EU countries, subject to specific documentation requirements.

The general requirements to apply for the Electronic Identity Card (CIE) are:

  • Possession of a valid passport or other national identity document.
  • Residence in Italy with regular registration with the Municipal Registry Office (Anagrafe).
  • For non-EU citizens, residence permit or application receipt (in case of expired permit, postal receipt proving the renewal)

Timeline for the identity card release

Process and timing

The timing for the (CIE) issuance is not immediate. Once the application is submitted to the Municipality, the card is not issued automatically; it takes approximately six working days for the production and delivery of the document.

  • Phase 1: DOCUMENT COLLECTION AND VERIFICATION (1–3 days)
During this phase, our experts will assist you in collecting the necessary documents.
  • Phase 2: CIE APPLICATION AND APPOINTMENT BOOKING (1–3 days)
Once the documentation has been verified, you can book an appointment at your Municipal Registry Office (Anagrafe).
  • Phase 3: DOCUMENT ISSUANCE (approximately 6 working days)
After submitting the documentation, it will take about 6 working days to produce the CIE. Once ready, you will receive the card at the address you provided

The application must be submitted at the Anagrafe office of your Municipality of residence. It is important to check whether the Municipality has specific opening hours or if it is necessary to book an appointment online.

F.A.Q. about the service

No. The CIE cannot be obtained immediately upon arrival in Italy. It must be requested at the Municipality of residence after completing the municipal registration.
The CIE has a predetermined validity that varies according to the holder’s age (10 years for adults, 5 years for minors aged 3 to 18, 3 years for children under 3). Once expired, it must be renewed.
Foreign nationals can also apply for an identity card. However, it cannot be used by foreigners abroad as an identification document. It is therefore recommended to always carry a passport or national identity document when traveling abroad. On the contrary, for Italian citizens, the identity card is issued with validity for travel abroad as well.
