Our passport appointment support
1. Identification of the competent Italian Consulate
We verify the applicant’s country and address of residence and identify the Italian Consulate with territorial jurisdiction.
The procedures, appointment availability and required documents may differ between consular offices. We therefore review the instructions published by the specific authority handling the application.
2. AIRE and Fast It preliminary check
Italian citizens who permanently reside abroad must generally be registered with the Registry of Italians Residing Abroad, known as AIRE.
Through Fast It, citizens can request AIRE registration, view their consular profile and submit updates to their residential address. Creating a Fast It account does not, by itself, constitute registration with AIRE.
During this phase, we assist the applicant in checking:
- whether the Fast It account is correctly registered;
- whether the account is associated with the consular record;
- whether the AIRE application or address update has been submitted;
- whether the personal details correspond with the Italian civil-status records;
- whether an outstanding AIRE issue should be resolved before requesting the passport appointment.
Where the applicant is not registered with AIRE or the registered address is outdated, the relevant request must generally be submitted through Fast It before the passport process can proceed.
3. Prenot@Mi registration and appointment guidance
Passport appointments at many Italian Consulates are booked through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Prenot@Mi portal.
The applicant must create and activate a personal Prenot@Mi account before selecting the competent Consulate and the relevant passport service. The personal details entered in the account should correspond with those of the passport applicant.
Our support includes:
- guidance with account registration and activation;
- review of the applicant’s personal details;
- identification of the correct Consulate and passport service;
- explanation of the booking procedure;
- guided assistance while the applicant searches for and selects an available appointment;
- review of the booking confirmation.
The Prenot@Mi account and the appointment remain personal to the applicant. For security reasons, applicants should not disclose their password to third parties.
4. Preparation for the consular appointment
Once an appointment has been booked, we review the instructions published by the competent Consulate and provide a personalised checklist.
Depending on the applicant’s circumstances, the Consulate may request:
- the passport application form;
- the current or expired Italian passport;
- another valid identity document;
- recent passport photographs;
- proof of residence within the consular district;
- evidence of AIRE registration or updated consular details;
- the appointment confirmation;
- the applicable consular fee and payment evidence;
- additional documents in cases involving minors, lost passports or changes in personal status.
The exact requirements and accepted payment methods must always be verified on the website of the competent Consulate.
AIRE registration and the passport application
Do I need to be registered with AIRE?
Italian Consulates generally require citizens permanently residing in their jurisdiction to have an updated consular and AIRE position before issuing a passport.
An applicant whose registration is missing, incomplete or linked to an old address may first need to submit an AIRE registration or address update through Fast It.
How can I check my AIRE position?
The Fast It portal allows users to access services connected with their consular and AIRE records. Depending on the account association and the services available at the competent Consulate, users may view their consular profile and monitor the status of submitted applications.
The status shown on Fast It should be reviewed carefully. A registered Fast It account is not necessarily evidence that the applicant has completed AIRE registration.
Can A&P complete the AIRE registration?
A&P may provide guidance and document-review assistance for the Fast It procedure. However, the declaration and supporting documents must be submitted in the name of the Italian citizen, and the registration is processed by the Consulate and the competent Italian municipality.
Where a separate or more complex AIRE procedure is necessary, this may be quoted as an additional service.
Appointment availability and timing
The time required to obtain an appointment varies considerably according to the Consulate, the number of applicants and the frequency with which new slots are released.
Some Consulates release appointments daily, while others make them available weekly or according to their own internal calendar. Applicants may need to access Prenot@Mi repeatedly when no appointments are immediately available.
The time required to issue the passport after the appointment also depends on the applicant’s file and the procedures of the competent Consulate.
Who can use this service?
The service is intended for Italian citizens residing abroad who need assistance with:
- applying for their first Italian passport;
- obtaining a new passport after the previous one has expired;
- replacing a passport that is expiring, damaged, lost or stolen;
- checking whether their AIRE details are correctly associated with the competent Consulate;
- identifying the correct passport appointment service on Prenot@Mi;
- preparing for the consular appointment.
The service may also be useful for citizens whose Italian citizenship was recently recognised and who need to verify that their civil-status and consular records are ready before applying for a passport.
Important service limitations
Passport appointments are made available and managed exclusively by the competent Italian Consulate.
Studio A&P cannot:
- create additional appointment slots;
- reserve an appointment outside the official booking system;
- guarantee that an appointment will be available on a specific date;
- influence the Consulate’s processing time;
- guarantee that a passport application will be approved;
- issue or deliver the Italian passport.
