General requirements for the Italian identity card application
During the consultancy video-call, our experts will evaluate whether you meet the requirements to apply for the CIE and guide you through the entire application process.
The CIE can be requested by non-Italian citizens residing in Italy who hold a valid residence permit and are registered with the Municipal Registry Office (Anagrafe). It can be obtained by foreign nationals from both EU and non-EU countries, subject to specific documentation requirements.
The general requirements to apply for the Electronic Identity Card (CIE) are:
- Possession of a valid passport or other national identity document.
- Residence in Italy with regular registration with the Municipal Registry Office (Anagrafe).
- For non-EU citizens, residence permit or application receipt (in case of expired permit, postal receipt proving the renewal)
Process and timing
The timing for the (CIE) issuance is not immediate. Once the application is submitted to the Municipality, the card is not issued automatically; it takes approximately six working days for the production and delivery of the document.
- Phase 1: DOCUMENT COLLECTION AND VERIFICATION (1–3 days)
During this phase, our experts will assist you in collecting the necessary documents. - Phase 2: CIE APPLICATION AND APPOINTMENT BOOKING (1–3 days)
Once the documentation has been verified, you can book an appointment at your Municipal Registry Office (Anagrafe). - Phase 3: DOCUMENT ISSUANCE (approximately 6 working days)
After submitting the documentation, it will take about 6 working days to produce the CIE. Once ready, you will receive the card at the address you provided
The application must be submitted at the Anagrafe office of your Municipality of residence. It is important to check whether the Municipality has specific opening hours or if it is necessary to book an appointment online.
