The latest Budget Law (Law 207/2024, Article 1, paragraphs 636 to 641) has introduced new contributions or increased existing fees charged to foreign citizens applying for citizenship in Italy through municipalities or from abroad through Consulates.
New contributions and fees
Specifically, until last year, only a €16 revenue stamp was required to apply for Italian citizenship iure sanguinis at the municipality of residence.
Starting from 2025, due to the complexity of the procedure, these applications have been subject to an administrative fee of €600 per applicant over the age of 18.
In the event of non-payment or incorrect payment of the contribution, applications will be considered inadmissible.
In addition, paragraph 637 of the Budget Law provides that:
‘municipalities may make requests for certificates or extracts of civil status formed more than a century ago and relating to persons other than the applicant subject to the payment of an administrative fee of no more than €300 per deed. For requests accompanied by the exact identification of the year of formation of the deed and the name of the person to whom the deed refers, the fee may be reduced’.
However, whether or not to introduce the new contributions is left to the discretion of the municipalities.
In addition, the fee for processing the application for recognition of Italian citizenship of a person over the age of 18 at diplomatic and consular offices has been increased from €300 to €600.
On the other hand, the €250 contribution to the Ministry of the Interior to be paid for citizenship applications for naturalisation and marriage or civil union with an Italian citizen has not been modified.
