Through AIRE registration, Italian citizens living abroad, whether as a result of relocation or because they have acquired citizenship later in life, can access the consular services of Italian diplomatic missions abroad.
Among the services that diplomatic missions can offer are:
- Ability to vote abroad;
- Obtaining identity and travel documents and certificates;
- Updating one’s address abroad;
- Keeping one’s civil status up-to-date, by notifying births, marriages, surname changes or deaths.
Who does not have to register with AIRE?
Registration with AIRE is compulsory for:
- Italian citizens who move abroad for more than 12 months;
- Italian citizens who are already living abroad, either by birth or by having obtained citizenship at a later date.
Those who:
- Remain abroad for less than 12 months;
- Perform seasonal work;
- Are part of diplomatic staff or NATO offices, together with their family members,
do NOT have to register with AIRE.
What documents are needed for AIRE registration?
AIRE registration can be submitted through the government portal FAST-IT. By registering on the portal, citizens can submit their application.
The following documents are required:
- AIRE enrolment form, automatically generated following the compilation of data on the FAST-IT portal;
- Copies of identity documents of the entire household;
- Proof of address abroad, not older than the last 3 months.
Alternatively, Italian citizens expatriating abroad may send an initial expatriation notice to the Italian municipality of residence. They will then have 90 days to complete the procedure on the FAST-IT portal.
How can you find out if you are registered with AIRE?
At the end of the enrolment procedure, a confirmation is sent to the applicants summarising their data and the effective date of enrolment. It is then possible to see your data by accessing the FAST-IT portal and, if necessary, to change your consular district of reference.
What are the risks for those who do not enrol in AIRE?
Failure to register with AIRE results in administrative sanctions for Italian citizens.
Furthermore, AIRE enrolment is not retroactive.
How can I enrol my child in AIRE?
For minors born in Italy of parents residing abroad, enrolment takes place together with the registration of the birth. The Italian Comune will inform the consular registry of the child’s registration.
Minors born abroad of parents residing abroad, on the other hand, are registered when the birth certificate is transcribed in Italy. If, on the other hand, the birth certificate has already been transcribed in the Italian Municipality, you can proceed via the FAST-IT portal.
FAQ on AIRE enrolment
Can people enrolled in AIRE have their health insurance card?
Individuals enrolled in AIRE lose their right to Italian healthcare assistance.
A partial exception is made for citizens with emigrant status (i.e. those who have acquired Italian citizenship on Italian territory and were born in Italy) or holders of pensions paid by Italian social security institutions, and who temporarily return to Italy.
For them, it is possible, following the presentation of a substitute declaration to the competent ASL, to obtain free access to urgent hospital services for a maximum period of 90 days in a calendar year.
When is one cancelled from AIRE?
You are cancelled from AIRE when you return to Italy, i.e., when you register residence in an Italian municipality.

Is a person enrolled in AIRE an Italian citizen?
Yes, the AIRE registry is only for Italian citizens.
