How we can assist
Italian citizenship rules for minors vary according to the child’s place of birth, citizenships, family history and the legal basis on which the parent is Italian.
Our assistance includes:
- preliminary eligibility assessment;
- review of the Italian parent’s citizenship status;
- identification of the correct citizenship procedure;
- preparation of a personalised document checklist;
- assistance with declarations before Italian municipalities or consulates;
- review of birth, filiation and adoption documents;
- support with translations, apostilles and legalisations;
- communication with the competent Italian authority.
Who may require assistance?
Children born in Italy to foreign parents
Birth in Italy does not normally result in automatic Italian citizenship.
We assist families in assessing whether the child qualifies under one of the limited citizenship-at-birth cases, whether citizenship may be acquired following a parent’s naturalisation or whether a declaration may be submitted after the child reaches adulthood.
Children born abroad to Italian parents
Following the 2025 reform, citizenship is not always transmitted automatically to children born abroad.
We verify whether the child qualifies for citizenship from birth or whether the parents must submit a declaration for acquisition by benefit of law.
The assessment may require reviewing:
- how the parent acquired Italian citizenship;
- the child’s other citizenships;
- the citizenship status of parents and grandparents;
- the Italian parent’s previous residence in Italy;
- any applications or court proceedings started before the 2025 reform.
Minors adopted by Italian citizens
We assist with citizenship cases involving foreign minors adopted by Italian citizens, including the recognition and registration of foreign adoption orders in Italy.
Where citizenship is not acquired automatically, we assess whether the child may qualify through a parental declaration or another available procedure.
Children of parents who become Italian citizens
A minor may acquire citizenship when a parent acquires or reacquires Italian citizenship, provided that the statutory residence and family requirements are met.
We verify whether the child is included in the parent’s citizenship procedure and whether additional filings are required.
Deadlines and fees
Some procedures for minors are subject to strict deadlines.
For example, certain declarations may need to be submitted within three years from birth or from the legal establishment of filiation or adoption.
A transitional deadline of May 31, 2029 applies to a limited category of individuals who were minors on May 24, 2025.
The €250 government contribution is no longer required for specific declarations submitted under Article 4, paragraph 1-bis, letter b), from January 1, 2026.
