The changes broaden certain permitted visitor activities and clarify routes for professionals delivering services in New Zealand.
A commercial meeting, an observational training visit and a technical intervention at a client’s premises can require different immigration arrangements. Changes effective from 20 October 2026 expand certain entry options while keeping the proposed activities central to the assessment.
Permitted business visitor activities include informal training limited to observation and theoretical instruction, without a formal qualification, and certain business transactions undertaken by people in management or financial services roles. The Business Visitor Visa allows up to three months in one year. Eligible visa-waiver travellers may instead use an NZeTA, subject to its requirements.
The Specific Purpose Work Visa, intended for work connected to a defined purpose or event, now expressly covers contractual service suppliers and independent professionals, with category-specific requirements and supporting evidence.
Preparing an assignment
Employers should document the actual tasks, service contract and assignment duration before choosing the route. Observing machinery during training and carrying out its installation or repair require different assessments. A short stay alone does not establish eligibility for visitor entry.
