Summary

US visa social media screening now includes TN, TD and I applicants, who must make their profiles public for consular review. The extension does not apply to B-1/B-2 visas or ESTA.

Since 1 October 2026, applicants in additional visa categories have been required to make their social media profiles public for consular screening.

The US Department of State has extended online presence reviews to applicants for TN, TD and I visas. Applicants are instructed to set their social media profiles to public or open.

The scope is category-specific. TN covers eligible Canadian and Mexican professionals under the USMCA framework, while TD covers accompanying dependants. The I category applies to foreign media representatives.

Preparing an application

Employers and applicants should include this step in their consular preparation and check the relevant post’s instructions before attending an appointment.

The announcement does not introduce the same extension for B-1/B-2 business and visitor visas or ESTA. It should therefore not be interpreted as a new blanket requirement for all business travellers entering the United States.
