New Zealand: travel restrictions and entry requirements for business trips

new zealand entry requirements

Learn about entry restrictions in New Zealand with our travel guide and advice for business activities regarding Covid-19 test, Self-isolation and Lockdown measures.

After long pandemic closure New Zealand reopened its borders on July 31st 2022: all eligible travellers are allowed to apply for a visa in order to enter New Zealand. Due to the low number of Covid-19 cases and a highly vaccinated population, the New Zealand Government removed most COVID-19 rules on September 12th 2022. However there are still important requirements which have to be fulfilled when entering the Country, in particular for people who travel to New Zealand by air.

1. New Zealand entry requirements

New Zealand has reopened the international border to all eligible travellers who can now enter and apply for a visa which is in particular necessary for Non-Australian or Non-New Zealand citizens. Even if the New Zealand Government has lifted most of the Covid-19 restrictions, some requirements are still in force, regarding in particular travellers who enter the Country by air (such as RAT tests and New Zealand Traveller Declaration).

2. Does New Zealand require Covid vaccine?

As of September 12th 2022 travellers entering New Zealand are not required to be vaccinated. All travellers should anyway be up to date with the Covid-19 vaccines, before travelling to New Zealand.

3. Covid-19 Test in New Zealand

As of September 12, 2022, travellers entering New Zealand are not required to test for Covid-19. However, all travellers are encouraged to undergo testing on specific days after their arrival.

4. Self-isolation

Travellers who are tested positive or develop Covid-19 symptoms must self-isolate for 7 days. The New Zealand Government allows to leave self-isolation to get a PCR test.

5. New Zealand Traveller Declaration

As of October 20, 2022, travellers entering New Zealand are not required anymore to fill out the “New Zealand Traveller Declaration” before departure, i.e. they don’t need a travel pass. However, entry requirements may change with very little notice.

6. Lockdown measures in New Zealand

New Zealand’s COVID-19 Protection Framework (a protection system based on traffic lights) has ended. Due to the low number of cases and a highly vaccinated population, most COVID-19 rules were removed in the Country on September 12th 2022. However some Covid-19 measures are still in place, such as:

  • some employers may still require workers to be vaccinated due to health and safety reasons;
  • a protective mask must still be worn in healthcare facilities, such as hospitals.
